About

This interactive tour of the Dom Square was developed as part of the Utrecht Time Machine. The UTM strives to share Utrecht's heritage via digital means and encourages all those interested to discover and interact with it.

About the project

This virtual walking tour of the Dom Square was created as a part of the "Living Pasts" course at Utrecht University. The aim of the course is to bring the past to life by showing the history of the city and its people in an interactive and creative way using modern tools and media. The iteration of Fall 2020 is focusing on the Dom Square.

This project is the first assignment of the Living Pasts course, in which we are challenged to create a unique and attractive walking tour of the Dom Square. Inspired by Cristina Moretti's chapter on walking as an ethnographic method in A Different Kind of Ethnography, we carefully observed the square and its users, and delved deeper into the history of the square, the architecture, its geographical aspects and much more.

With our product, we aim to reach incoming students at Utrecht University and teach them more about the history of Dom Square and Utrecht as a student city. To make sure that the walking tour is both appealing and memorable to students, we chose the format of a personality test that students can engage with while they learn about the 'student heritage' of the Dom Square.
